Odisha Takes Major Steps to Boost Coastal Protection, Climate Resilience, and Sustainability
In a bid to tackle climate change and protect its natural ecosystems, the Odisha government has signed a series of important agreements. One of the key MoUs was signed with IIT Bhubaneswar under the Enhancing Climate Resilience of India’s Coastal Communities (ECRICC) project. The agreement aims to restore critical coastal ecosystems such as seagrass beds and salt marshes, which are essential for biodiversity, carbon capture, and coastal protection. IIT Bhubaneswar will serve as the technical support agency for the restoration and management of these vital ecosystems along the Odisha coast.
Minister Ganesh Ram Singh Khuntia emphasized that this partnership would foster research opportunities and promote community engagement, encouraging sustainable coastal management practices.
In addition, the government signed a Letter of Understanding (LoU) with the World Food Programme (WFP) for a regional project called Adaptation for Resilience (ADAT4R), a collaborative effort between India and Sri Lanka. This five-year project, focused on the Nuapada district, will aim to strengthen the resilience of farming communities, especially women, who are increasingly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. With support from the Adaptation Fund, the initiative will encourage diversified livelihoods, resilient farming practices, and better access to climate-related services.
Another significant MoU was signed with the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW), a leading think tank in Asia, to develop a net-zero roadmap for Odisha. This initiative will focus on decarbonization strategies in critical sectors like industry, power, transport, and agriculture. By aligning with India’s net-zero targets for 2070, the collaboration represents a major step towards Odisha’s sustainable development goals.
These collective efforts reflect the state’s Vision Odisha 2036, strengthening its commitment to sustainable development, biodiversity conservation, and climate resilience.
