For Anumati, a resident of Om Nagar, the scheme has been a game-changer. “We had been considering solar panels even before the scheme was announced, and by coincidence, we installed them during the Pran Pratishtha ceremony of Lord Shri Ram ji,” she shared.
Before installing solar panels, Anumati’s electricity bills ranged between ₹2,000 and ₹2,500. Now, her monthly bill has dropped to ₹500, with occasional increases that rarely exceed ₹2,500 to ₹3,000. “We’re saving around ₹3,000 a month, and the subsidy process was incredibly smooth—it was credited within 15 days. We are truly thankful to the Prime Minister for this initiative,” she said.
Similarly, Abhishek, another beneficiary, highlighted how solar panels have transformed his electricity costs. “My monthly bill used to be ₹24,000 to ₹25,000. After installing a 10-kilowatt solar system, my bills have drastically reduced. In winter, I’m even saving electricity units. This scheme is remarkable, and I hope more people take advantage of it,” he said.
Rapid Implementation and Subsidy Support
Himanshu Nagpal, Chief Development Officer (CDO) of Varanasi, praised the scheme’s implementation, noting that over 45,000 applications have been submitted, with 11,000 homes already benefiting. “This initiative is showing incredible results, with some households even reporting zero electricity bills. Subsidies and financing options are making solar energy accessible to everyone,” he added.
Under the scheme, the government offers a central subsidy of ₹78,000 for up to three kilowatts of solar power, with an additional ₹30,000 from the state government. This financial support makes it easier for families to adopt solar power without the burden of upfront costs. Banks such as the State Bank of India, Punjab National Bank, and Bank of Baroda are also providing loans to facilitate installations.

The scheme’s success in urban areas has inspired plans to expand solar installations to rural regions. “Our aim is to turn villages into solar-powered communities and install solar panels in homes built under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana,” said Nagpal.
